nigeltde: Richardson approves (I loved my mother)
Ok, so that DAAS poll was because, thanks to the unyielding demands of procrastination and nostalgia, I am throwing up some pages on fanlore about The Good Old Days and I wanted a little consensus on what to call the DAAS page. I think I will go with Allstars because that's what's inside my copy of Book.

My main problem being that I have destroyed a number of brain cells in the years between TGOD and now so I am pretty useless at creating actual content.* I only joined in 1999 and I was a total lurker. For instance, I can't remember if there was wank that moved the fic over to DAASFic or if it was congenial. And did we talk about anything other than the DAAS boys? This kind of archival is exactly what Fanlore is built for so come on old guard and new guard, roll up those sleeves and get those memories down! And please do spread the word if you have the inclination.

Australian Comedian RPF page; The Big Gig page; Good News Week page; DAAS page.

* To be honest my abiding memory of those boards was getting schooled for sticking my fourteen-year-old nose into someone else's flamewar. OH THE BURNING, I CARRY THE SCARS TO THIS DAY.

[livejournal.com profile] ohinternets has made an interesting, eloquent and comprehensive post about the epic failure of OTW (aka [livejournal.com profile] otw_news, aka The Organisation for Transformative Works), which I almost entirely disagree with. I vomited a tl;dr into the comments box and then thought better, and it has finally spurred me into actually posting my thoughts on the OTW. So here is what I think about some of the more common criticisms (as voiced by [livejournal.com profile] ohinternets) of the OTW, which I have followed keenly since its inception in [livejournal.com profile] astolat's journal.

tl;dr of doom )

In all honesty, the only issue raised in this whole series of discussions that has really taken me aback was was raised in Scalzi's blog in response to the (inaccurate) idea that the legal team will be active in pursuing cases. An Eric says in several places:
I think fanfic is artistically legitimate but may not be legally legitimate–and I’d like to see that brought into accord.... eventually someone will take you to court because they can or because they don’t like you. And if you lose, your case is going to make bad law. And that bad law may end up being used against other creative people....

(1) try to avoid going to court–seriously, our legal system is only marginally better than throwing witches in the pond when it comes to getting to the bottom of things; and (2) if you can’t avoid court, be the best defendant you can be. Be able to show your lawyer (so he can show a judge or jury) that you did everything you could to follow what law was in place and to be a sympathetic character. Be a good client, in other words. Don’t sit there and tell your lawyer you didn’t hurt anyone or you were waiting for the law to become settled or you were entitled or that it’s not fair you’re being sued when those people over there aren’t.

My only response to that is to say that this problem has always existed, and I don't believe fandom as a whole ought to (and could) completely warp their legitimate practice to something that complies with the letter of the law for fear of being taken to court. However, the idea of setting a bad precedent deeply worries me; and I hope that the OTW's legal defence fund and expertise and connection with the EFF etc will help when (not if) someone sues the creator of worst possible and most culturally unacceptable example of fanwork they can find. So in that respect, the OTW is a good thing; the mitigating factor being that corporations may view it as a direct threat or challenge.

In conclusion: ideas = awesome, execution a little less so. So, you know, let's work on it, give feedback, get involved, and help make the OTW what we think it ought to be!

Dear Fandom,

I am looking at the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts profile, and while I like looking at all the languages, and I appreciate the geek factor of a Latin translation, I have to ask, where are the Elivish and Klingon translations?

FAIL!

Everyone reading this is probably already aware of [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts. (If not, go and join with your fandom journals! It's at over 30,000, now.)

In an attempt to also count fandom *communities*, a specific interest has been created - fandomcommscount.

If you manage any communities that were created for purposes related to fandom, then go ahead and add the interest to the community's interest list. Whether the community is still active or not!

Simply go to the Community Management page. Click the 'Info' link next to the community. Paste fandomcommscount into the 'Interests' field. Save the changes.

You can watch the community count here.

Please, spread the word :)

After a discussion in [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope's journal, [livejournal.com profile] moveablehistory has set up a Digg-style link aggregator. It feels like something that could fit perfectly with lj fandom--is there one out there already?--because the dispersed nature of it is something I hear people complain about quite often.

I think this could be a really, really useful tool to keep track of the several major events happening in fandom right now, and I encourage people to spread the word, join, and especially add links! I suppose [livejournal.com profile] metafandom serves a similar purpose but link aggregators are perhaps easier to surf than lj, and it has the potential to be aimed at the fanlib/fanarchive and strikethrough2007 issues and the fan activism that has grown out of them with greater breadth and depth. Also, it wouldn't be for just lj links. Posts like [livejournal.com profile] catrinella's awesome collection of links are great but can become unwieldy.

moveablehistory has also noted that link aggregators have the potential to serve as a centralised portal for access to decentralised fandom and fanfiction should there be mass migration from lj. In fact it would still probably be useful even if things stay essentially the same. As moveablehistory says, we can use the news one as a proof of concept to see if a fandom-wide one would be feasible.

Other shit you probably already know about: [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts, [livejournal.com profile] fandompays. Interesting to see fandom try to take stoke of its numbers and how statistics will translate to resistance. The fandom_counts profile is occasionally breaking! This stuff fits into one my my major essays in ways I can't believe.

And on the season finale of House.....vague spoilers )

oh, god, back to essays I suppose.

And now, in your latest issue of WHEN FANDOMS COLLIDE:

1. Daran Norris, aka Cliff the Awesomest Lawyer Ever on Veronica Mars? IS THE VOICE OF COSMO AND MR TURNER.

2. Bruce McDonald, Hugh Dillion, and....Michael Rosenbaum? Match made in heaven! GAY heaven.

Discuss.

Essay mojo gone. Apparently I suck at stuff that doesn't have anything to do with pop culture and/or the gays. Funny that. FUNNY CAUSE IT'S TRUE. I wish I were a penguin, that'd be pretty cool. Or a llama. Or, like, Jake Gyllenhaal's dog. Yeah, that I could deal with. Ego-deflating essays? Something that requires an attention span of longer than ten minutes? Not so much.

Wow, so since my last post I have managed to get onto the computer, um.......twice. Frankly I'm a little stunned that I made it this far at all--if the withdrawl didn't kill me, all the 'being outside' and 'hanging around normal people' stuff surely would have. I'm made of stronger stuff than I thought. Perhaps a Mr Creosote-type post-Christmas explosion is just taking a little while to kick in.

The houseboat was awesome. I'll probably post pics so that you can all marvel at the swankness of it. Then it was just day after day of taking the Englishers out on touristy stuff, into town and to Glenelg, down to Victor Harbour & Granite Island, up to the Barossa for a wineries tour (YUM), and over to Kangaroo Island for a couple of fabulous days (I did ALL the driving for the kiddies' car. Awesome, I love driving, but everyone else got to sleep and read, bastards). Then the blitzkrieg of Christmas, and work on the public holidays, and catching up with friends, and going out with L, and shit, the year's gasping its last breath.

These are the books I have bought or acquired in the last month or so and haven't been able to read yet: )
and an Umberto Eco, Foucault's Pendulum, which I've been reading for the last couple of weeks when I can get a chance.

Oh, and I have Noel Baker's Hard Core Roadshow on the way from Amazon.com, a late Christmas present, and I placed [livejournal.com profile] docbrite's The Value of X on order. Woooohoooooooooooo!

Anyway, hope everyone's Christmases and Hannukahs and surrounding times went well.

PS: King Kong? MARRY ME PJ!!!!!! There's a good article on it in the latest The Monthly. (Which is not entirely about menstruation.)

Oh and I got tons of great stuff for Christmas (pictures of one particularly awesome one coming soon to screens near you!) but one of the best was a story written for me by [livejournal.com profile] veronamay: Gifts, PG, H/W. Thank you!

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] veronamay, look at the curve of and light on Ray's back in my mood icon over there, and tell me that CKR is not stunningly beautiful *g*

Ok so this is going to be long, I think.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] lainy122 has done a photo post and covered all the pertinent bits, and [livejournal.com profile] melinda_goodin has already written up a couple of panels excellently. Also, [livejournal.com profile] docbrite's reactions (and her bird-related squeeing) are great. So probably this is all redundant :-D

Right, well, first up, I adored Melbourne. Melbourne; Meagan; fabulous purchases )

Sad farewells to Meagan, and then we started trying to make our way to the Hilton, which is where the con was at. I left the map at the hostel and got us totally lost and poor Lainy had to walk about 2k out of the way with a busted knee.

Vampire panel; Blankety-blanks; first-time con-goer panel )

That night was the Great Debate, which had us all laughing our bleached anuses off. Great Debate )

martial arts panel; slashgirl parTAY )

Saturday morning we began with the Moving out of Genre panel with Jack, Neil, Poppy and Fiona, and it was really interesting. Neil and Poppy stuff, mostly )

Neil's GOH speech, Mirrormask, Dave McKean )

The forensics panel, like everything else, was interesting. More on this )

Fantasy and Fairytale panel )

Somewhere in there we had a great Chinese dinner with a lovely old-school fan and slasher named Donna (if you're reading this, Donna, drop us a comment!) and hooked up with Jess from Perth (who kindly allowed us to stash our stuff in her room, and whose lj name I have no idea of) to watch an episode of Firefly ("Arial") and the bloopers (hee!) and the Serentity trailer (eee!). Then at night it was the masked ball, which Lainy and I didn't exactly prepare for, like, at all. But a cool dude was making balloon hats and he gave us one each! The costumes were absolutely amazing. There were any number of gothy outfits, some furries, Danny Oz and his wife and someone else as the Joker, Harley and Ivy, a Jack Sparrow, a TV's Frank (I think! But he didn't have the right hair), and so on. Amazing work by some people. Also somewhere in there we went to Neil's and Poppy's signings (squee!) and [livejournal.com profile] melinda_goodin made a Harry Potter run, being nice enough to grab me one at the same time :-D

Sunday morning we got up ridiculously early for the first panel, Myths of Warfare. More on this )

The Australian Folklore and Fairytales panel was extremely interesting and I was really looking forward to it (Lainy went to the Stephen King panel at this time, so ask her for info about that). It began with the panellists noting that they had a really interesting experience going to Europe, where mythology and history are tied directly to place and especially nature, and how this is not their experience within Australia. Of course this segued into Indigenous mythology and the Australian landscape, and the bulk of the discussion was about how appropriate it is to use Aboriginal mythology in fiction if you're a non-Indigenous Australian. More on this )

Not having read any of her work, and having had the impression throughout the con that she didn't really want to be there, I was not expecting to enjoy Robin Hobb's Guest of Honour speech quite as much as I did. on writing and having children; Important Lessons Jessie Learnt from Robin Hobb )

LOTR in the style of... panel )

During the lunch break we watched Neil's A Short Film About John Bolton, a funny mock documentary about a vampire-obsessed artist. It managed to be both completely predictable and extremely entertaining.

Then was Poppy's GOH speech in which she was the cutest thing ever. Witness: )

Gods and Monsters panel; Neil being amusing; Research and Methodology panel; blogging panel )

Slash panel! )

Then there was the closing ceremony, then Melinda gave us a ride back to our hostel, then I ate an extremely nice Chinese meal, then we caught the train, then I read HBP, then we got home, the end. My god!

.....just me?

Also, [livejournal.com profile] lainy122 has posted a pic that will stun and amaze you. Warning! Fandom Overload Incipient If You Click That Link. Be Sure To Wear Your Seatbelt!

Yes, Kant has mushed my brain. I have the mental age of five tonight.

Meanwhile, all of a sudden I cannot stop playing that John Butler Trio song Zebra. It's all Shalot's fault, she made that awesome DS vid.

Also [livejournal.com profile] tinalikesstuff has posted some gorgeous Sandrah Oh pictures over here

Speaking of Canadians and CKR, [livejournal.com profile] versaphile has posted eps of a great show called Twitch City at [livejournal.com profile] twitchcity. This show is such great fun! People who know these things, which part of Canada is Don McKellar'st accent from? I'm actually *noticing* the accent for a change.

Cate Blanchett was on Denton the other night but I missed most of it. She's just so frightfully cute and admirable and talented and beautiful! I adore her.

These things are so much fun! You get to find out lots about people.

1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog/site with the answers to the questions and leave the answers as comments on my blog.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] chameleongirl79:
1 - What 5 things do you consider essential for others to know about you?
2 - If you could trade places with any super villain for a day, who would you choose and what would you get up to?
3 - What's the story behind your username?
4 - Peace or freedom?
5 - Umm ... is Adelaide as boring as everyone says?

Last night I finished Vikram Seth's An Equal Music. I'd previously read The Golden Gate (a novel composed entirely of sonnets, even the contents and acknowledgements) by him, and while there were elements of it that I was dissatisfied with, I thought it was brilliant. But An Equal Music is even better; I was just blown away by the beauty of the prose. It wasn't consciously beautiful in that purpley-but-not way, but just this quiet, gentle, poignant, questioning lyricism and it was the main reason why the main character didn't come off as a self-centered jerk, which he really could have. His name is Michael and he's a violinist, which is the other reason I adore this book. I know much, much less about classical music than I would like to and this book was absolutely fascinating in that it gives you an idea about what it's like to be a clasical musician. Anyone who loves music passionately, even, I reckon, if they're not fond of classical music, would love this book. It's about what music does to us, does for us, about why it's so important. And the woman Michael loves has a certain medical condition which I won't spoil because I can't be fucked to use the cut tags but Michael's musings on it are absolutely heartbreaking. Plus, it's also set in Vienna and Venice and the descriptions of the cities are wonderful. Just, a fantastic book; if you get the chance, check it out.

And now for something completely different:

For 5 of your fandoms, name:

1. The first character you first fell in love with:
2. The character you never expected to love as much as you do now:
3. The character everyone else loves that you don't:
4. The character you love that everyone else hates:
5. The character you used to love but don't any longer:
6. The character 'ship everyone else loves that you don't:
7. The character 'ship you love that everyone else hates:

SV, DS, BtVS/Angel, LotR, SN. Bearing in mind that I'm rather conventional and OTPish and have no real idea who fandom at large does and doesn't hate )

Part 2 (Part 1 here). More people including Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, Nicole Kidman, Paul Battany, Paul Gross, River Pheonix, Sam West, Johnny Depp, and Tori Amos. Also miscellaneous comics stuff, horses, and other photographs. Rather less worksafe than pt 1.

...and on and on... )

Thank you and goodnight!

Lainy had a picspam. Well, I don't have as many hilarious cartoons as she does but seeing as I have tons of pictures I thought I would have one too. So here are some of my favourite pictures. Erm, divided into two parts because, well, there are a LOT. Also most of these I have resized smaller so if you want a bigger version, comment or email. Maaaaarginally worksafe.

And so on.... )

Featuring many people including the lotr cast, Angelina Jolie, the Beatles, Hard Core Logo, Brad Pitt, Kenneth Branagh, Paul Newman, Chris Meloni, Charolastras, SG-1, Michael Rosenbaum, John Cusack, Keira Knightly, Milla Jovovitch, Boondock Saints.
