Jul. 17th, 2006 11:33 pmJust now I bought a couple of DVDs for the Gulfport Library, which lost a great deal of its collection during Hurricane Katrina, because it horrified me to think of people without access to the wonder that is the Redford-Newman team-up (went with The Sting because BC&tSK was unavailable), or the kick in the soul that is Schindler's List (um.....because Arrested Development s3 was unavailable...). One of the girls at work--which makes it sound like there's a lot which really, no; also, I am not a secretary--left, and poor Saturday Arvo me has to go in till her replacements start (one thing I have noticed with full-time work in retail is how incredibly sick of my own voice I get. I can't imagine how you guys who work in call-centres do it). I'm not very good at small-talk so I have my stock lines and their little variations for all the samey stuff we do, but I get sick of them, and sometimes I am called to go beyond the one-liner-and-thankyou. It often backfires on me. (PS: I work in a hospital)
Today:
Customer, in those walking stick/crutch things that circle your forearms: Whew, I hope they're not worrying upstairs. I've been ages getting here.
Jessie: Yeah, it's a long walk, isn't it?
C: I'm so glad there were lots of seats along the way. This is the first time I've tried it.
J: But you're up and about now?
C: Yeah. I broke all the bones on the right side of my body.
J: Wow! Nice work! How did you manage that? That's really impressive.
C: ....
C: A car did it.
J: ....
J: Ah.
C: ....
C: I've been in hospital for eight weeks.
J: ...
J: Ah...
J: Right, so...
J: Do you need a carry bag for that?
I hate myself and I want to die.
