nigeltde: if trixie could just think hard enough she would undo everything (Default)
you know what, I'm reading reading reading, maybe what I can do here is post links to some of the more interesting stuff I read. then at least I can still be alive.

So, two things:

- Revisting Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy criticism. I have only already read the highly recommendable Bordwell piece so I look forward to delving into the others.

- Penny Arcade fail timeline. A while ago -- I was so out of it last year I completely missed this -- Penny Arcade prompted (through various fails) and then was at the centre of a number of discussions that began with a debate about whether rape jokes can be funny in rape culture and then exploded into wide-ranging examinations of geek culture, feminism, allies, masculinity, and privilege. A lot of people shared very personal stories, and a lot of people made some really disgusting trolly twitter accounts, so enter at your own risk (the timeline is not triggery except possibly in some screenshots of twitter posts further down the page).

via [community profile] bzzinglikeneon: Bacardi's tacky, stupid and horrible ad campaign. Making women anxious and competitive about their appearance is SOP for the advertising industry but I've never seen anything this blatantly offensive. I've never haad Bacardi and now I never will.

This is called Buffy vs Edward, but of course it's really Buffy vs Bella, and as fucked up as Buffy-and-Joss- as-feminist-icons can be she's light years ahead of Bella and Moyer's bullshit.

I just know there's some joke about porn in heaven to be made, but I'm too tired to make it.

In all seriousness I've studied her (and McKinnon, but I preferred Dworkin as her agruments seem less spurious and I like her engagement--erm, not in the marriage sense--with Ronald Dworkin who I'm a big fan of) and her arguments a little in the last couple years of uni and she's had quite a big impact on the way I think about pronography and free speech, and the position of women in society today. I'll never forget housesitting for my aunty, shut up all alone in a Bad Part Of Town (never mind that I was across the road from a Police Station), doing research on an essay and just reading Dworkin and McKinnon in absolute horror--the statistics, the stories of women who've been horribly abused; I never wanted to leave the house again. In a wierd twist of timing, Lavender Lady Maz and I were talking feminism all day today at the hospital, absolutely oblivious.

ION: I'm going to My First High School Reunion tomorrow night (because it's been so long since we left). It'll be nice to hang out with my friends but I'm dreading the endless, mind-numbing "so, what are you up to now" conversations.
