I am human therefore I rank, and a while ago over at Jason Mittell's blog I found myself compelled, I say compelled, to defend Deadwood in the face of ambivalence and preference leaning towards The Wire (a truly wonderful show).
As a consequence I have been rewatching -- reliving -- being retraumatised by -- all three seasons this last month or more, conveniently in conjunction with Todd van der Werff's excellent reviews over at AV Club, and all I can say is I just hope that one day I see the work that will elbow this show aside from the whore's room of red macramé lovehearts that this thing occupies in the very centre of my heart because that usurper will be something special indeed.
The thing that this rewatch has taught me is that I am a fucking coward who could barely handle even the idea of watching the last three episodes, who absolutely cannot cope with the significant death of the penultimate episode and other characters' reactions to it. I AM A MESS YOU GUYS, SEND ALCOHOL PLEASE.
I have also been enjoying the audio commentaries. On a completely unconnected note, there are some audio files over at Calamity Dan's that are interesting listening. Timothy Olyphant and Anna Gunn are to my pleasant surprise and amazement dirty-mouthed and hilarious.
