nigeltde: if trixie could just think hard enough she would undo everything (true story!)

THOMPSON PROBABLY PLANNED SUICIDE. Remains may be blasted out of a cannon. First part of the headline: poignant. Second part: makes me laugh. Editorial genius!!

Are YOU interested in MOVIES? What about QUEERS? Your favourite stars in the hottest movies of the year! Queer studies: six new texts. Teeheehee.

And here's one for the AAAAARGH!STUPID files: Councilwoman seeks smut filters at library. "We're providing smut at taxpayers' expense," she said..."Do we want to wait until a child is attacked or molested in a restroom? It's not a matter of if but a matter of when."

And finally, two lists: Banned Books in the Year 2191 ("Our Robot Masters: Though They Force Us to Say Otherwise, We Are Not Proud to Serve Them") and Last Lines From Best American Short Stories Not Yet Written ("The 50-year high-school reunion was over. Soon the stomach-cancer streamers and suicide balloons would be a memory. As would Margaret standing defiant by the fruit punch.")

My preliminary lecture for Beauty: Pleasures and Priciples today was quite interesting although there seems to be a greater focus on the visual arts than I would like, which is understandable I guess, though I don't know why it's that much more difficult to discuss architecture and literature and poetry, even if music and speech are a bit too bothersome to set up for a lecture. There'll be a pretty big focus on movies, apparently mostly because that's all students are well-versed in and willing to talk about. And I hope we're not going to get too bogged down in the dry stuff about forms and so on. I have my own various ideas about beauty that dodn't seem to come up in the lecture outlines so I hope I will get to explore them in my essays. I'm surprised and glad that after such a long and incredibly lazy and self-indulgent holiday period I can actually garner up interest in and enthusiasm about studying. I hope it lasts....

Today was my last day working in Emergency because I have will have no free weekday afternoons (still gonna go in Mon and Tues mornings though). I made a good friend there, K. (I don't think she'd want her name "out there"), who's had a really fascinating life and is full of stories. And she's not really done anything big and exciting (although she's travelled quite a bit in her later years and she's going to NZ in three weeks! *envy*) but she's just worked really, really hard and been a kind of weird people magnet. Initially she struck me as one of those women who is just so confident and capable they can take on anything but in fact she's overcome a huge shyness and a husband who unloaded all his financial and other bullshit on her. We have quite different political views but she's quite inspiring and I felt rather sad at leaving her, although I'll go back to visit quite often I'm sure. It's only downstairs form the wards.

(There's this other woman there who works Tuesdays on the wards named Maz. She's maybe 55, 60, and I can imagine myself ending up just like her. She's a fucking riot. We were once talking about how we loathe people tossing cigarrette butts out the windows of cars and she told me this story about when she was younger: her and her friends were bundled in the car going down the street when the women in front emptied her entire ashtray out the window. At the next lights they pulled up beside her and Maz, who was in the passenger seat, grabbed their own ashtray (which was chokka), leaned out the window, yelled "I think you dropped something, mate!" and upturned the entire thing in the woman's Rather Expensively Dressed lap. And then they took off. HA!)

I say we crush that councilwoman to death with a hefty weight of a billion porn magazines! *g* Incidentally, if you are under 18 years of age you cannot access the internet in our libraries unless you have parental consent. You can, however, borrow whichever movie you wish from our collection, which sports a number of R rated films *bg*

A relative of mine was regularly borrowing Shaun Hutson books from the public library at 12, no questions asked.

You'll get a bit of an inkling here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/hutson) *g*. She insisted on reading out a few passages once & one was a fairly graphic bdsm threesome that was disrupted by carnivorous slugs. Bit strange listening to a really young kid read things like that to you & no I didnt dob her in..
