"Arf," she said
Mar. 9th, 2004 11:13 pmWell, in less disgusting news, I saw Absolute Zappa on Monday night!
Filthy Habits
Dog/Meat Variations
Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?
Lucille
Why Does it Hurt When I Pee?
Cosmik Debris
Uncle Remus
G-Spot Tornado
Planet of the Baritone Women
Teenage Prostitute
Revised Music for Low Budget Symphony Orchestra
Theme From Lumpy Gravy
RDNZL
Duke of Prunes
T'Mershi Duween
Packard Goose
Outside Now
Muffin Man
Peaches En Regalia (encore)
Dirty Love (encore)
It was good, very good, and everyone was prodigiously talented (as you would expect). But it just seemed to... pack less punch than I expected. It must be because, even though it'll probably be the closest I ever get to see Zappa performed live (sob!) it just cannot touch the real thing; and that goes doubly so for the non-instrumentals because the vocals were sorely missed. On the other hand, there was a definite Zappaness to the entire thing; it probably doesn't get much more Zappa than violins wailing out the question, "why does it hurt when I pee?" It is a testament to such a great composer that these songs are so strong no matter how they come.
Highlights were: Cosmik Debris, Uncle Remus, T'Mershi Duween, Peaches, and Dirty Love.
And so here's my Billy the Mountain icon back, because if I was ever forced, with the threat of a thousand painful deaths, or maybe an episode of Joe Millionaire, to pick my favourite ever song, this happy little ditty about a plucky young mountain, his small wooden wife, and the most mysterious man in the world would most likely come up trumps. Marry me, Frank!
