Oct. 5th, 2003 11:33 pmIt's curious to see Silence of the Lambs left out of this list of great post-1990 horror films. For me it's definately one of the classics. Clarice Starling is a fantastic heroine, and the climax in the dark is one of my top all-time scary moments, it really touches something in me. Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill are two fun, creepy bad guys, there are lots of great lines and it has a wonderfully labyrinthine, gothic visual look. (and seriously, The Sixth Sense? Scary? Nuh uh.)
Similarly, Kubrick's The Shining is left out of the top pre-1990 horror films. I've only seen it once but it creeped the ever-loving shit out of me. I must see it again soon.
Note to self: see Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, The Hunger, Prophecy, The Ring (either version).
The Beatles
Midnight Oil
Queen
Nirvana
REM
Coldplay
Smashing Pumpkins
U2
NSYNC
Dixie Chicks
Matchbox 20
Counting Crows removed (heard the name but not the music), Midnight Oil added. I don't know any Dixie Chicks songs (although I understand they're country, which I'm not fond of) but they get up because of their willingness to speak out against Dubya. Plus, I have a vast, passionate dislike for Matchbox 20. NSYNC's music is pretty repellent but they're just so entertaining. Billy Corgan can write a nice tune but his voice just grates.
ETA: A giggle
The Queer Eye guys makeover some Fandom Men. Excerpt from Jack Sparrow's:
TED: Come and take a look at the bar. We’ve tried to provide a little more variety, a little more finesse -- some top-brand vodka for mixers, a nice brandy --
JACK: Where is the rum?
TED: Rum -- you know, rum’s nice in a pina colada or something like that, but it’s a little downscale, and if you’ll just consider --
JACK (pulls out musket): We’ll be putting the rum back, mate.
TED: And the rum goes back.

Date: 2003-10-05 09:41 am (UTC)#2 i would not trust a web site that has anything good ot say about thirteen ghosts.
#3 i wouldnt trrust a web site that chooses 1990 as the changing or focus point of anything
#4 you are correct on both counts, but i do not know if silence of the lambs can be considered a 'horror' movie. i have heard a lot of people say 'psychological thriller', but that is only because they dont know how to describe a movie

Date: 2003-10-05 11:45 pm (UTC)But I agree - Silence of the Lambs should *definately* have been in there. And I keep telling you, the Shining book is SO much creepier than the movie. So there :p

Date: 2003-10-05 11:54 pm (UTC)*g* I will read it someday! Do you have a copy I could borrow? Actually, watching the movie I really felt like I was watching a Stephen King story; Kubrick's direction really conveyed the essence of SKs writing. SK apparently didn't like the movie, but oh well *g*
