I'm surprised by how much darker The Princess Bride is as a novel, compared to the movie. Goldman is far more morbid. I really enjoyed the book, just as much as the movie, although I think the movie will in the end have more long-term appeal; it seems he took the opportunity to refine much of dialogue (such as Westley's 'breasts' quip).

I love the novel - if anything it's even funnier than the film. I like how Buttercup is a) not terribly bright and b) not terribly nice, either. I don't remember any specific "darkness", but it has been a while.
