Oct. 15th, 2009 04:41 pmI saw Moon today and thought it was really good. I appreciated its lack of bombast; it knows the central mystery is pretty obvious and doesn't really treat it as a mystery, or even tackle in psychological depth the ramifications of the science/ philosophical question at stake; instead it is a quiet, atmospheric, simple movie about hope, and a man's disintegration. It wasn't as beautiful as it could have been -- the shot composition was a little underdone -- but the always excellent Clint Mansell's superb "outside theme" (you can hear it in the trailer) renders the exterior scenes hauntingly memorable. Rockwell is of course excellent and the whole film just sits in perfectly paced suspension.
My only problem was the specificity of the sound bites at the end; I thought it was uselessly conclusive and the success or failure of the return to earth was not the point at all. Jones handled the material really well until that point. I am also unsure as to whether I like that only ten or twelve years have passed; had it stretched into the hundreds it would have given an enormity to a personal situation; however I get that he needed a reason to go home. Still I was a little disappointed that there had only been a few Sam clones woken up.
