nigeltdeSo I was so psyched about finally, god, finally seeing Watchmen I left my laptop on the floor at the candy bar when buying tickets and didn't remember four hours later until I got home. After I recovered from my heart attack we raced back and turns out the staff had found it and put it away. So a happy ending. Hurm. Or is that RAWRRR?
It was better than I was expecting! Man, and haven't been able to sit still for the last day, and I knew it was going to be awful and cheesy and maybe too faithful and maybe Goode wouldn't work and the ending would be a disaster but it was NONE OF THOSE THINGS, PRAISE JESUS.
My quibbles amount to a couple of cheesy lines that should never have been allowed and bad CGI on Bubastis, that's, like, IT. My posse thought the use of Hallelujah was weird and didn't like the scene, but I think it was meant to be funny. God, it was INSANE to see all that shit in live action, the panels right from the start, the Minutemen, the dog Rorschach sees in the inkblots; oh my GOD, the PAGLIACCHI JOKE SEQUENCE! All the changes made sense -- calling them the Watchmen, making the psychiatrist a little harder, keeping the cops and the newspapers out of it, the increased focus on Nixon et al; shifting some of the Veidt monologue to earlier was genius. Was expecting the extra gore/peen and boobs from Snyder, the gore in particular was squirm-inducing. You can see where they cut out the fate of Nite Owl 1, I bet it'll be in the director's cut.
Haley was just pitch perfect, sublime when he had the mask off. Sir was great -- the Comedian brought a lot of life and character to the first half. Everyone else was good. I enjoyed seeing Laurie be so badass. The CGI on Manhattan was great, I loved the skin texture. I was so amazed they kept the structure! The flashbacks at the funeral, Manhattan's flashback. I really appreciated the inclusion of all the world-building elements, Gunga Diner, the photos, all that.
In conclusion: wheeeeeeeeeeee!
