I love you a lot, but I saw Marathon Man last night, and if that's what you call cutting out the gay, boy, you must be watching with one eye closed.

PS: It was good but not nearly as good as the book. Plus the first movie I've seen where I had problems with Dustin Hoffman. OTOH, Roy Scheider was very pretty.

PPS: Battlestar Galactica is so the best sci-fi show ever! I am Laura Roslin's bitch. Now if only their queer creds would catch up with their gender and race creds.

Ayup. Some people *want* to be bashed over the head with The Point.

Or maybe Vito had the great majority of viewers who *need* to be bashed over the head in mind when he wrote that criticism. I personally think they have enough movies tailor made for them as it is - for godsake leave something for the rest of us.

Too right. It's weird because he's so sensitive to subtext in earlier movies, but so blind to it in later ones. And of course it wasn't relationship subtext but individual indicators of queerness. I think in '81 people were sick of the trends they saw and were hoping for a linear transition from subtext to explicitness, and so were blind to stuff like in Marathon Man (which may be a bad example because the book is direct about the relationship between Doc and Janey (DAMN YOU JANEY!!!!)).
