At the moment Amnesty International Australia is campaigning for the Australian government to urge the Singapore government to grant Australian man Van Tuong Nguyen clemency from the death penalty. He is facing execution in a matter of weeks after being convicted of drug trafficking. There's a good article on it here. I didn't know that Singapore executed more people per capita than any other country (over 400 people have been executed since 1991).

Amnesty International strongly opposes the death penalty, of course, and has sent out an Urgent Action about Van Tuong Nguyen to members. There's a letter at the bottom of that page that's easily c+p-able if you don't have much time. All I did was print out four copies of it addressed to the four different people.

There is also a petition regarding Van Toung Nguyen's situation in Parliament at the moment. It finishes tomorrow. Why not give your local MP a ring to see if they've signed it? And if you can't ring, they all have email addresses. You can find your local MP here. And if you don't know your electorate: http://www.aec.gov.au/_content/who/profiles/index.htm .

Dear Minister,

My name is [name] and I live in [suburb].

I understand that there is, at the moment, a petition in Parliament regarding the Australian man Van Tuong Nguyen, who is facing execution in Singapore. I urge you to sign this petition, if you haven't already. I believe very strongly that the death penalty ought to be abolished in all cases; in the case of Mr Nguyen, who has never offended before and has demonstrated remorse and co-operated fully with authorities, I believe that it is utterly unconscionable.

Even if you are unable to sign the petition, I urge you act with your fellow ministers in lobbying the Singapore government to grant Mr Nguyen clemency, as I understand is allowable under the Singapore constitution.

Yours sincerely,

ION, finally got to see Little Fish yesterday. Fantastic performances--I could watch Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving all day--but I was left feeling a little empty. The screenplay just didn't have that much there below the surface; the actors did what they could to create depth (and Cate and Hugo pretty much managed) but they couldn't disguise what was lacking in the script. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly that was, but I know that I left dissatisfied. I don't know, maybe that was the intended effect.
