God, you know, I expected it to go Howard's way but I really thought it would be closer. The amount of swing towards the Libs was just insane. I'm very depressed about it, to the point where my mum, who's just as keen on politics, told me to put it in perspective. But I mean, it's pretty friggin important, the guy in charge of our country for another three years is a narrow-minded, lying, fear-mongering, corporatist asshole. I just can't help thinking of all the people who are going to suffer because of these idiotic, narrow policies, and my God, will we EVER get to sign the Kyoto protocol now? And I didn't even VOTE Labor, but I refuse to feel guilty because the Greens pretty much match me perfectly principle wise, so I suppose I should be happy that they've done so well, but aaaaahhhh. I think Latham's actually a pretty good guy, and although I really disagree with some Labor policies, I think he could have done a good job. On the up side, I guess he'll be even better prepared next time around. I just feel like tonight was a turning point for Australians and we totally bypassed it. I felt like there was a lot of potential for us to have made this planet better and we fucked it up. I get it intellectually but I am having a great deal of really understanding how someone could vote Liberal (or Family First, like, how scarily well did they do?). When you vote you have to think about what's best for fucking Indigenous Australian infants dying at birth and Iraqi civilians being bombed and single mothers having to work for the dole and people locked up in detention centres for THREE YEARS and the gasping ozone layer and our depleted seas and so on and so on and so on. People think so NARROWLY and it kills me. OK, I'm going to stop now because I could go on for ever. I'm going to have my comfort fruit salad and watch a comfort movie, maybe Holy Grail or FotR. I could do with a fucking laugh.

Let's just pray that this isn't how the US election is going to go.
