It reminds me of when I was sitting in the staff room with workmate Shaun and about 8ish other people. Shaun asks me who I'm going to vote for and I say Greens. He admits that he's not on the electoral roll, but we discuss the policies of the Greens and he agrees with most of them (NOT what I expected) and congratulates me on sticking with my beliefs. Silence from the rest of the room.
Another person enters, asks coworker who they voted for. "Oh, the Liberals of course!" was the reply. At this point the staff room erupted into gruntings of approval, with people nodding left and right, oh yes oh yes! I trust him with our economy! he's such a strong leader! etc etc. Ugh.
As my mum pointed out, the reason we need a good economy is to PAY for things like healthcare, roads, welfare and support services. So what's the point in having a good economy with a budget surplus, low tax rates and low interest rates if more money isn't put into these things? So we can spend more money on consumer bullshit while we continue to ignore the poor, the homeless, the disabled, the sick in need of more hospital beds, the mentally ill and the refugees locked up for 6 years in a jail?
Rargh. So not only will we probably be in the same economy as with any other government, but the problems that existed before the election will continue to exist!
Please Johnny! I'll take the tax rises! Just FIX something! ANYTHING!
Oh, and don't forget that the homosexual tree-hugging dole bludgers will have forced FILTHY FILTHY drugs onto your children before making them get an ABORTION and thus sending them to the BLOODY DEPTHS OF HEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I understand why Labor has the image of being weak, but I just don't understand why Howard's way of doing things is so much better. He fucking flip-flops and retracts and lies about everything! GST, anyone? Children overboard? Interest rates? Sure, he can be "strong" but the policies he's stong on are almost universally bad! So he can fuck Australians--not to mention those bastards who flee here looking for a better life or whatever--in the ass all the time but so long as he does it forcefully and consistently, he's a damn good leader!

But we've totally turned away from that idea of governance; I loathe this neo-liberal conviction that somehow the private sector can be trusted to take care of our health and education and the quality of life of our less fortunate people. Are they retarded? Bottom-line thinking has absolutely no relation to greater human well-being! We pay taxes so that those caught in the crappy end of capitalism's boom-bust cycle don't become homeless! We pay taxes so that any kid regardless of his/her parent's income can get a good education! We pay taxes so that the people who were here millennia before anyone else don't go preventably blind and die twenty years before white people. Christ it gets me angry.
