Am I the only one who thought "on the nose" meant something along the lines of exaggerated/too obvious, the etymology somehow stemming from something to do with "smelly"? As in, I used to be into Nine Inch Nails but now, except for The Fragile, which is awesome, I find them a bit on the nose, possibly because His Rezship is so very definitely smelly.

Apparently it means precise, spot on. Whoops.

I like my meaning better.

I guess it's like in charades, where you touch your nose to indicate that someone has a right answer? Or when you tap your nose slyly to indicate...um...slyness. Or something.

There are actually two meanings of 'on the nose' in use. One, 'that's a bit on the nose' means something that smells gross, the other, as in 'you got it right on the nose' means spot on/exactly.

Australian, English it is not.
